Doctoral studies at Mines Saint-Étienne train researchers capable of innovating and advancing scientific knowledge.
Lasting three years after a Master’s degree or equivalent, the doctorate combines research work, doctoral training, and thesis defense, leading to the award of the title of Doctor. Accredited to deliver doctorates within the Doctoral School “Sciences, Engineering and Health” (EDSIS 488), in partnership with Jean Monnet University and École Centrale de Lyon, the School hosts approximately 150 doctoral candidates.

Each year, 50 doctoral candidates graduate in various fields: engineering sciences, biology and health, computer science, image and signal processing. They benefit from cutting-edge technologies and the expertise of the School’s research-professors.

Openness to industry and international is at the heart of the programme:

  • 30% of doctoral candidates are in a CIFRE program, working in partnership with companies.
  • 50% are international, integrating into a global research network.

The international co-supervision program allows doctoral candidates to conduct their thesis under the joint supervision of two supervisors, from French and foreign partner institutions. This training model strengthens scientific cooperation between Mines Saint-Étienne and renowned institutions abroad, while fostering the exchange of skills and the enrichment of research work. Upon successful defense, a single degree, jointly recognized by both institutions, is awarded.
