Current Projects

The GEO department is involved in numerous collaborative research projects, working with academic institutions and industrial stakeholders to develop practical solutions to environmental and organisational challenges. These projects are often funded by regional, national or European bodies, reflecting the department’s commitment to applied research initiatives.

The thesis focuses on the renovation of the building stock which, in France as in most countries, runs up against several obstacles whose combined effects include: those linked to renovation demand due to owners’ low willingness to commit; those linked to supply due to a poorly structured, craft-based economic fabric characterised, among other things, by limited skills; and those linked to public coordination due to a public service focused on support, which nevertheless struggles to justify its role given its low effectiveness.

Through the legal arrangement at its core, the thesis directly addresses these three sets of obstacles: the owner, who will have to delegate the role of contracting authority—only, though not without difficulty—on the basis of a project co-designed with the concessionaire; the latter, an “integrator”, tasked with carrying out works based on the “order book” granted under the concession; and the public authority, which will establish this order book and will ensure—before, during and after the execution of the contract—that the renovation of the building stock is carried out as effectively as possible.

Sustainable Development Goal

Created following the PRECISION project (2017–2020, ERDF funding, Occitanie Region), as part of a call for projects under the Plan Rhône, CIT’IN CRISE is an awareness-raising tool on flood crisis management for the general public, elected officials, etc.

Based on the expertise in crisis-management training simulators at Mines Saint-Étienne and IMT Mines Alès, it is a tabletop serious game for around a dozen players. Over 2 hours, the players take on the roles of the stakeholders actually involved (Mayor, Prefect, head of technical services, municipal police officer, etc.) and are required to “decide” on the actions taken by the different parties in order to manage a flood crisis as effectively as possible in a fictional municipality.

Thus, by enabling

  • citizens to become informed and rational actors facilitating real-life crisis management,
  • elected officials to discover the world of the crisis unit and the need for thorough preventive thinking to implement an operational Municipal Safeguarding Plan,

CIT’IN CRISE contributes to the resilience of territories exposed to flood hazards. CIT’IN CRISE is actively used (more than 300 sessions delivered) and is being disseminated across a variety of territories (Rhône corridor, Gironde department, Wallonia, etc.).
