Design & Sustainable Innovation — Become a designer capable of driving transformation

The Master of Science in Engineering Prospective Design (PRODE) trains designers with enhanced skills in engineering and management, to help organizations design, evaluate, and deploy innovative solutions (products, services, processes) that create value for all stakeholders.

The programme focuses on the ability to initiate and then manage an innovation process, integrating its technical, human, and financial dimensions. Particular attention is paid to eco-design and project management in line with sustainability imperatives, while remaining deeply rooted in design issues throughout the curriculum.

Entry Level: M1 (2 years) or M2 (1 year)
Exit Level: Master’s Level / Master’s Degree
60 / 120 ECTS
Internship: 3 months in M1, 4 to 6 months in M2
Location: Saint-Étienne Campus
Language: French

Why choose PRODE?

  • A highly sought-after hybrid profile
You develop a true “triple language”: design, engineering, and management.
  • Drive innovation, not just conceive it
You learn to structure a project: vision, business, feasibility, action plan, implementation.
  • Integrated eco-design and sustainability
Design choices are approached with an impact logic (environmental, social, economic).
  • Projects rooted in reality
Case studies, mini-projects, multidisciplinary projects, partnerships, and real-world scenarios.
  • An opening to research
Analytical and reflective approach, thesis preparation, introduction to scientific methodology.

A programme supported by two complementary partners

The Master of Science in Engineering is offered by Mines Saint-Étienne and IAE de Saint-Étienne (UJM). Teaching takes place at both sites, with a mixed teaching team (professors and research professors) and possible collaborations with other programmes from both institutions.

Skills Developed

Upon completion of the Master of Science in Engineering, you will be able to:

  • Supplement a design or conception background with a multidisciplinary and systemic approach
  • Communicate with R&D, production, engineering, finance, marketing, sales
  • Address innovation challenges for public, private, or associative organizations
  • Build a strategic vision: possible futures, prospective scenarios, transition trajectories
  • Develop a solid argument taking into account the impact of decisions and real constraints

The Vision of the Master of Science in Engineering Program Director

Training designers capable of driving sustainable innovation

“Design is not just a matter of form or creativity: it is a discipline that helps build choices, arbitrate, and make innovation feasible. In the Master of Science in Engineering Prospective Design (PRODE), we train students capable of connecting vision, uses, feasibility, and business model, integrating eco-design and sustainability issues from the outset.
Our objective is to train hybrid profiles, capable of communicating with engineering, R&D, marketing, or finance, and of driving an innovation process from end to end. The emphasis placed on projects, internships, and the research thesis allows for the development of true maturity: analyzing, arguing, building scenarios, and taking action. Upon graduation, our alumni are ready to take on responsibilities in innovation, design management, or consulting.”
