The Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering (SMS) at Mines Saint-Étienne is recognised for its expertise in materials mechanics, solid-state physics, and multi-scale structural behaviour. Its research activities are carried out within a single leading research unit.
The Georges Friedel Laboratory is a joint research unit (UMR) of the CNRS, affiliated with the Institute for Engineering and Systems Sciences (INSIS). It is based at Mines Saint-Étienne and is jointly managed by Mines Saint-Étienne and the CNRS.
The LGF brings together all of the School’s expertise in materials science, mechanics, and processing, combining both fundamental and applied research, from the microscale to full-scale structures.
Researchers from the SMS Centre contribute through work on:
- Mechanical behaviour of metallic, composite, and ceramic materials
- Numerical modelling of structures and processes
- Advanced experimental methods for material characterisation
- Industrial applications in sectors such as transportation, energy, healthcare, and the environment
Une Research Driven by Industrial Challenges ancrée dans les enjeux industriels
Through its involvement in the LGF, the SMS Centre engages in research that is both fundamental and applied, with a strong emphasis on collaboration with industry and academic partners. Its work actively contributes to the understanding and improvement of materials and structures, supporting the transition towards more sustainable and advanced industrial systems.
