The Master of Science in Engineering GPIA is structured around a two-year curriculum:

  • M1: acquisition of fundamentals in process engineering
  • M2: specialization in advanced processes or applied artificial intelligence

The Academics are supported by a reference laboratory, the Georges Friedel Laboratory (LGF – CNRS UMR 5307), guaranteeing strong immersion in research and innovation.

Overall Structure

Academics taught entirely in English.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ENGINEERING 1 – Fundamentals of Process Engineering

M1 can be completed:

  • either within the Process and Bioprocess Engineering track at Claude Bernard University Lyon 1,
  • or by equivalence for students from compatible backgrounds (chemistry, mechanical engineering, materials, etc.).

The curriculum covers:

🔹 Semester 1 (300 h)

  • Applied Thermodynamics
  • Heat and Mass Transfer
  • Unit Operations
  • Chemical Kinetics
  • Applied Mathematics / Numerical Methods
  • Instrumentation and Measurements

🔹 Semester 2 (200 h)

  • Process Modeling
  • Biochemical Engineering or Bioprocesses (depending on the track at Lyon 1)
  • Process Simulation and Design
  • Applied Internship (8 to 12 weeks)

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ENGINEERING 2 – Process Engineering & Artificial Intelligence (GPIA)

🔹 Semester 3 (300 h)

M2 is based on a common core “Process Engineering for Energy” and a specialization choice at the end of the semester.

Common Core – Process Engineering for Energy (160 h)

Process Simulation & Thermodynamics

  • Process Simulation
  • Advanced Thermodynamics
  • Complex Thermodynamic Equilibria

Matter-Energy Conversion

  • Reactors and Chemical Conversions
  • Thermal and Energy Balances

Thermal Transfers & Operations

  • Multiphase Transfers
  • Mass and Heat Transfer
  • Thermal Unit Operations

Thermal Machines & Regulation

  • Thermal Systems
  • Thermal Machines
  • Control and Monitoring

Specialization Choice (100 h)

Students choose one of the following two blocks:

OPTION 1 — Focus Process Engineering

In-depth scientific and technical study of industrial processes:

  • Advanced Crystallization
  • Transfers in Multiphase Media
  • Process design (design and optimization)
  • Industrial Energy Applications
  • Advanced Simulation

✔ Ideal for a career in engineering, process engineering, energy, or R&D.

OPTION 2 — Focus Applied Artificial Intelligence for Processes

AI approach to strengthen process analysis and optimization:

  • Introduction to Machine Learning
  • Image & Pattern Recognition
  • Advanced Statistics for Process Engineering
  • Numerical Tools for Experimental Data Analysis
  • AI Applications in Energy, Conversion, and Processes

✔ Ideal for hybrid careers: data & process engineering, optimization, industrial AI, digital twins.

🔹 Semester 4 – Internship & Thesis

The second semester is dedicated to a professional or scientific application:

Internship in a company or laboratory (5 to 6 months)

Examples of activities:

  • Process Simulation and Optimization
  • Design of Energy Units
  • Development of AI Tools Applied to Processes
  • Statistical Analysis or Data Engineering
  • Research at LGF or in partner laboratories

Master’s Thesis

A written report and a defense conclude the internship.

📚 Programme Highlights
