Who is the Master of Science in Engineering Prospective Design (PRODE) for?

The Master of Science in Engineering Prospective Design (PRODE) is aimed at students who wish to become designers capable of driving innovation, by combining design, engineering, and management.
The objective is to train individuals capable of designing, evaluating, and implementing value-creating solutions (products, services, processes), while integrating human, technical, economic, and sustainability challenges (eco-design, impact, transition).

Ideal For

The PRODE is particularly suitable if you wish to:

  • lead an end-to-end innovation process (vision → design → implementation),
  • interact with functions such as R&D, production, marketing, finance, sales,
  • develop a systemic and prospective approach (scenarios, transitions, possible futures),
  • learn through action, via projects and internships.

Eligible Profiles

Admission to M1 (Bac+3 entry)

Students holding an L3, DNMADE, or equivalent level can apply, particularly those from programs focused on:

  • design (product, space, interaction, service),
  • design / innovation,
  • applied arts and related disciplines,
  • multidisciplinary programs with a strong project component.

Admission to M2 (Bac+4 entry)

Students holding an M1, DSAA, or equivalent level can apply, as well as ICM 2A Mines Saint-Étienne students, subject to a suitable 2A curriculum.

The PRODE is open to applications from French or international programs (at an equivalent level), provided they are consistent with the Master of Science in Engineering’s objectives.

Expected Prerequisites

The Master of Science in Engineering welcomes diverse profiles, but expects a minimum foundation for success.

Essential

  • A design/project culture (methods, creativity, analysis, iteration).
  • The ability to formalize: explain an approach, justify choices.
  • A strong motivation for innovation (products/services/processes).
  • An awareness of sustainability challenges (eco-design, impacts).

Key Strengths

  • Significant initial experience in projects (workshop, internship, assignment, competition).
  • Curiosity or foundational knowledge in: marketing, strategy, finance, materials, programming.
  • Interest in foresight (scenarios, transitions, complexity).

“Ideal” Profiles

The PRODE is particularly suitable, for example, for:

  • design students wishing to strengthen their ability to drive innovation with engineering and management constraints,
  • “design/innovation” profiles seeking to gain true depth in “design + foresight”,
  • students aiming for interface professions: design ↔ engineering ↔ management ↔ strategy.

Desired Qualities and Motivations

The jury particularly values:

  • curiosity and open-mindedness (technical, economic, social),
  • the ability to work in a team and with diverse profiles,
  • rigor: structure, analyze, document, justify,
  • the desire to integrate real-world constraints (budget, feasibility, deadlines),
  • a responsible approach: eco-design, impacts, sustainability.

Portfolio and Application: What Really Helps

For a compelling application, highlight:

  • 2 to 5 significant projects (context, role, approach, deliverables),
  • your ability to problematize (need, use, stakeholders),
  • how you integrate feasibility and impact,
  • what you want to build: your project (sectors, types of positions, topics).

This Master of Science in Engineering is less suitable if…

The PRODE is probably not the best choice if you are looking for:

  • a program focused solely on “form” creation without a management/engineering dimension,
  • a curriculum without long projects, without iteration, without argumentation,
  • an innovation approach that does not consider constraints (technical, human, financial, impacts).

❗️ Applications are open from January to April.
