The workshop “Material forming processes and eco-design” was held from December 10 to 14 for second-year students in the Prospective Design Master of Science in Engineering. They were hosted in Open Sources’ workshops in Saint-Étienne for a week of prototyping and manufacturing, as part of the lead-up to the Biennale in March 2019.
“Product design and reverse design”
The manufacturing process was at the heart of this prototyping week for 17 second-year Master’s students, as part of the joint Prospective Design Master of Science in Engineering between École des Mines de Saint-Étienne / École supérieure d’art et design de Saint-Étienne / Université Jean Monnet Saint-Étienne.
The aim was to give materials a second life by building a scenario and enhancing the materials, focusing on deck chairs (or garden loungers): an exhibition will be held at the School, followed by a showcase during the 2019 Design Biennale in Saint-Étienne.
The workshop was hosted at the premises of the Open Sources association, a partner of the School in delivering design/eco-design projects.
It was supervised by Baptiste Menu, a PhD student at the SMS center, as part of the experimental framework of his thesis, “Materials as a lever for eco-design”.
