The inter-institutional diploma (DIE) “Major Transitions: measuring and understanding in order to act” is being hosted at Mines Saint-Étienne until October 2. Offered by the Collège des hautes études Lyon – Sciences (CHELS), this programme addresses the issues of today’s world from a multidisciplinary perspective.

The DIE “Major Transitions: measuring and understanding in order to act” brings together students from diverse backgrounds, with no prerequisites. Usually taken alongside a course of study or as part of a gap year, it offers a semester of classes followed by a 6-month internship.

This year, Mines Saint-Étienne is welcoming the 12 students of the new cohort from September 28 to October 2. They will be able to pursue their programme of reflection and analysis on the major transitions linked to climate change alongside the school’s teacher-researchers.

Going beyond academic boundaries

The breaking down of disciplinary silos lies at the heart of the DIE, which offers cross-disciplinary teaching and immersive learning around three areas:

  • Measuring and monitoring impacts
  • Understanding major transitions
  • Taking action to drive change

With this diploma, students develop a transdisciplinary, systemic perspective on major transitions and prepare for the complexity of the professional environment.

Bringing perspectives together to enrich pathways

The DIE is part of the overall approach of the Collège des hautes études Lyon – Sciences (CHELS), which brings together eight institutions of excellence: the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon, Centrale Lyon, emlyon business school, the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, Mines Saint-Étienne, Sciences Po Lyon, Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, and VetAgro Sup.

By combining expertise, CHELS breaks down disciplinary silos to provide students with additional assets for professional success.

It fosters curiosity and cross-cutting knowledge through the DIE, lifelong learning training modules, as well as the shared course: a lecture series open to all, which this year will focus on the theme: Uncertainty and the uncertain.

By taking part in the DIE offered by CHELS, Mines Saint-Étienne reaffirms its ambition to train responsible professionals, capable of considering major transitions in all their complexity.
