Abstract

Faced with contemporary social and environmental challenges, companies are called upon to genuinely change their course of action and transform their organization in order to achieve real positive environmental and social impact. To address sustainable development issues, companies have long relied on corporate social responsibility (CSR). However, CSR is increasingly being challenged for its ineffectiveness in responding to the challenges of climate change.
Companies are therefore compelled to reconsider their operating methods in order to truly shift paradigms. It is in this context that we have been witnessing for some time the growth of new organizational forms and models through legal measures such as the mission-driven company resulting from the 2019 PACTE law, or through practitioners’ proposals where concepts such as the regenerative enterprise, impact enterprise, contributive enterprise, or permaenterprise are emerging. The latter is defined by its promoter Sylvain Breuzard, founder and CEO of the digital services company Norsys, as “a new development model.”
The objective of this thesis is to examine these models, particularly that of the permaenterprise, in order to understand its distinctive features and its contribution to achieving positive environmental and social/societal impact. The aim is to establish the conditions under which such an organizational model is performative, that is, how are the principles of the permaenterprise concretely translated into action? What is this model’s capacity to genuinely transform organizations so that they have real impact?
The thesis work will consist first of defining and positioning the different models to be studied, particularly that of the permaenterprise, and second, of conducting fieldwork within the company Norsys where the permaenterprise model is implemented. This work will be based on a qualitative exploratory approach, using an in-depth case study. In line with the subject, we plan to deploy a processual and/or ethnographic approach, based on immersion within Norsys, where long-term observations, in-depth interviews, and the collection of multiple secondary data will be conducted.
The expected results of this work are, from a theoretical perspective, to contribute to research on the sustainable transformation of organizations, to the development of a critical perspective on CSR, and to extend work on performativity to the field of CSR and new organizational forms. From a managerial perspective, the aim will be to identify the organizational practices associated with the permaenterprise and examine how these practices enable overcoming (or not) the limitations of CSR.
