Mines Saint-Etienne is partnering with Creabeille in an initiative to preserve bees, which are vital pollinating insects. This initiative is part of the school’s sustainable development and social responsibility (SD&SR) strategy and will initially involve 17 hives located on the G. Charpak Campus.
Through this partnership, the school aims to:
· Provide a favorable environment for the colonies’ gradual transition into dormancy (wintering) to prevent energy expenditure that causes excess mortality, facilitate brood rearing to create new colonies in the spring, and extend the lifespan of winter bees.
· Provide Creabeille with a nearby, secure location for better monitoring of the colonies’ health while reducing the carbon footprint of this surveillance.
· Demonstrate that public-private partnerships are possible for biodiversity preservation as well as sustainable and local agriculture, with potential educational avenues to be developed.
If the harvest allows, honey from “our bees” will be offered to staff.
