The new exhibition “When the Earth Shakes” has been inaugurated

On Thursday, March 26, La Rotonde inaugurated its new exhibition “When the Earth Shakes.” Volcanoes, earthquakes, tectonic plates, mountains in formation—this exhibition offers a fascinating journey through time and into the heart of the Earth.

Our Earth, constantly in motion, is continuously transforming and shaking. With interactive installations, animated models, and engaging experiments, visitors will be able to understand how to protect themselves in the event of an earthquake.

The exhibition unfolds in three acts:

  • What is an earthquake?

This section offers an exploration of the interior of our planet in order to better understand why the earth shakes. Geological concepts such as the Earth’s interior, plate tectonics, and seismic waves are addressed.

  • How do we characterize and measure an earthquake?

This section presents several experiments to explain how an earthquake is measured, with what instrument, and what is exactly measured. These data make it possible to characterize an earthquake but also to better understand the dynamics of our planet. The calculation of magnitude and the epicenter of an earthquake is addressed, and visitors can observe the operation of a seismometer.

  • Can we protect ourselves from an earthquake?

Civil engineers develop construction methods that make buildings more resistant to seismic shocks: this is earthquake-resistant construction. Although it is impossible to predict precisely where and when an earthquake will occur, it is nevertheless possible to limit damage by building in an appropriate manner, thereby significantly reducing human and material losses related to the collapse of buildings.
