On November 11, 1918, the end of hostilities was signed in the Forest of Compiègne. World War I came to an end, having caused the deaths of 18.6 million people (9.7 million military and 8.9 million civilians).

Each year, the students of Mines Saint-Etienne gather in uniform to pay tribute to the 143 students of the School who fell defending freedom. Of all civilian schools, Mines Saint-Etienne paid the heaviest price.

This tribute is a reminder of the School’s values as well as recognition of the struggle for peace, democracy, and freedom.
