At the end of March, more than 170 students from different schools took part in the “3D printing and construction challenge”. Together, they worked on the topic “Let’s reinvent soft mobility together in downtown Saint-Étienne”.

The 2023 edition of the competition

The “3D printing and construction challenge” competition brought together 170 students from different schools: École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Saint-Étienne, em lyon, Mines Saint-Étienne, Télécom Saint-Étienne and ENISE. The students worked in multidisciplinary teams of 8 people on the topic “Let’s reinvent soft mobility together in downtown Saint-Étienne”, following 4 creation stages (ideation, design, prototyping and production).

While taking into account the challenges of sustainable development (greening and cool islands), this challenge aims to mobilize students’ multidisciplinary skills around calming a district while reinventing a living space. The ambition is to imagine a downtown district of Saint-Étienne, with soft, active and safe modes of transport, while maintaining/developing the momentum of the city center. It was necessary to:

  • Propose mobility solutions better suited to usage: soft and active mobility – autonomous vehicles – electric microcar, bicycles, self-balancing scooters, drones, urban cable car, etc…
  • Rethink infrastructure: street furniture, roads, electric charging, shelters with activities, infrastructure, cool islands, etc…
  • Imagine an ergonomic, low-impact and secure digital district: displaying information at the right time and to the right person, applications to develop, etc…

Award-winning teams

After two days of work and reflection, the students presented their project to a jury. The jury awarded the 3 best teams:

First prize was awarded to Group 1 Modoux (ENISE, ENSASE, Mines Saint-Étienne), which receives a 3D printer for each member and their full-scale printed creation.

Second prize was awarded to Group 18 Impluville (ENISE, ENSASE, Mines Saint-Étienne, Télécom Saint-Étienne), with €200 in gift vouchers offered to members.

Third prize was awarded to Group 15 (ENISE, ENSASE, Mines Saint-Étienne, Télécom Saint-Étienne), which wins €150 in gift vouchers per member.

Audience award was awarded to Group 4 (ENISE, ENSASE, Mines Saint-Étienne, Télécom Saint-Étienne), which also received €100 in gift vouchers.

Congratulations to the winners and to all participants!
