The Académie des Sciences is an assembly of scientists comprising 400 members, selected from among the most eminent French and international specialists. It covers all formal and experimental sciences. Each year, the Académie and IMT honour scientists whose work contributes to the following research areas:
- Responsible industry of the future
- Digital sovereignty and sustainability
- Energy, the circular economy and society
- Engineering for health and well-being
This year, Stéphane Avril, Professor at Mines Saint-Étienne and Director of the SAINBIOSE laboratory, received the IMT–Académie des Sciences Grand Prize.
He is being honoured for his pioneering research in biomechanics, which made it possible to create the first personalised digital twins of the aorta, to better anticipate aneurysm ruptures and guide surgery. His work explores a new discipline: biomechanics at the crossroads of engineering and life sciences.

Already a recipient of the Christian Oddou Prize from the Congress of the Society of Biomechanics, Stéphane Avril is an internationally recognized researcher, author of over 200 scientific publications, and a patent inventor… As a trainer and mentor, he guides numerous doctoral and postdoctoral students and consistently highlights the work of his teams and laboratory when his expertise is recognized.
“I associate this recognition with my mentors, my colleagues, my teams and my students, who, through their creativity and commitment, have helped build this interdisciplinary body of work at the interface of mechanics, biology and medicine.”
Mines Saint-Étienne is proud to count Stéphane Avril among its faculty researchers. With this award, the School is also being recognised and shines at the Académie des Sciences.
