From August 23 to 27, 2021, in Lyon, Mines Saint-Etienne organized the “IEEE 17th International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering“. A week focused on the theme of “Data Driven Automation” in a hybrid format, with a record number of participants (555, including 170 in person).

The IEEE CASE took place for the first time in France, in Lyon. Each year, this event serves as the main international research forum on automation. The aim is to promote research valorization, technology transfer, and regional promotion by hosting French and international congress participants for a week.
This year’s conference covered key themes in automation science and technology across all sectors of society: sustainable production, digital health, smart cities, logistics, human in automation, data science, AI, industrial robotics… And for this first hybrid edition, a record participation (555 participants from 40 different countries) and a record number of submissions (629, including 33 special session proposals, 5 workshops, and 591 papers) were registered.
The 2021 edition in figures
- 435 papers in 11 parallel sessions (China 95, United States 88, Germany 51, France 46, Italy 22, Japan 19, Sweden 13, Taiwan 12, South Korea 11, United Kingdom 9, …)
- 555 participants from 40 different countries
- Nearly 170 congress participants present in Lyon
- 5 workshops on current topics in data-driven automation
- 1 industrial panel (Industry Panel) with St Microelectronics, Heva, La Ruche industrielle, Alibaba group, Amazon, and Schneider Electric
- Several industrial sessions (dedicated to IRD)
- 2 technical visits: SNCF-Technicentre and Volvo Trucks
- 2 activities organized by the Student Committee (“Lunch with leaders” and “Women & Young professionals in engineering”)
- 4 special awards presented (best paper, best student paper, best application paper, best healthcare automation paper)

Social events were also offered to participants, who were warmly welcomed at the City Hall lounges for the “Welcome reception.” Subsequently, the traditional banquet took place at the Collonge Abbey, and the closing ceremony took congress participants on a cruise between the Rhône and Saône rivers.
A high-level international conference
With “Data Driven Automation” as its main theme, IEEE CASE 2021 provided a true conference experience with face-to-face exchanges and a rich social programme. “Data-Driven Automation” was at the heart of these exchanges and presentations. These innovation areas address the challenges of our society: technological, digital, organizational, human, environmental. Researchers, experts, and industrialists work to break down silos in their work to put engineering sciences at the service of the multidisciplinary applications enabled by this type of conference.
