The IMPACT international ranking by the British monthly Times Higher Education reveals each year the higher education institutions that uphold the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Mines Saint-Étienne confirms its position on ecological transition and progresses notably on measures related to combating climate change (SDG 13).

In the overall ranking, out of nearly 2,000 institutions, the School ranks in the top 201-300. More specifically, Mines Saint-Étienne ranks as the 1st or 2nd French institution on 6 SDGs.
From a regional perspective, the School is the 1st institution in Auvergne Rhône-Alpes on 16 Sustainable Development Goals and 10 for the South Region. It should be noted that this prestigious list is increasingly competitive with over 200 new institutions ranked in 2025.

Exemplary Practices

To compile this ranking, Times Higher Education relies on scientific output, teaching, and institutional practices. We can thus highlight the work of the SPIN centers and the Henri Fayol Institute on the redevelopment of industrial brownfields in Saint-Étienne: a measure taken in favor of a circular economy and energy efficiency and decontamination that contribute to SDGs 11 and 13.

But also the SMS center and its RAVES project, which aims to recycle metallic materials for the automotive sector: a measure taken to optimize production and responsible consumption (SDG 12).

Finally, the actions of La Rotonde should be commended as they contribute to training indicators on various SDGs.

As David Delafosse, director of the Aix-Marseille-Provence campus, emphasizes, “these results are the consequence of our strategy: to confirm our status as a pioneer and make sustainable development the driving force behind all of the School’s initiatives. The ranking highlights our constant innovations in research, training, transfer to industry, dissemination of scientific culture, and especially in our daily practices and choices as an institution.”
