Mines Saint-Étienne shines once again this year in the international Times Higher Education “IMPACT” ranking dedicated to sustainable development and social responsibility.

As a reminder, the School joined this ranking for the 1st time in 2020. It lists higher education institutions worldwide according to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out by the United Nations (UN).

The publication of the 2021 ranking shows that the School has improved both its position and its score across the four Sustainable Development Goals on which it is assessed.

  • Sustainable cities and communities
    Top 200 worldwide out of 656 institutions (top 400 out of 470 in 2020): a 45% improvement.
  • Partnerships:
    Top 400 worldwide out of 1,154 institutions (top 600 out of 800 in 2020): a 43% improvement.
  • Industry, innovation and infrastructure:
    Top 300 out of 680 institutions (top 300 out of 494 in 2020): a 33% improvement.
  • Responsible consumption and production:
    Top 200 out of 503 institutions (top 200 out of 360 in 2020): a 9% improvement.

This result is the outcome of a proactive policy on sustainable development and social responsibility (SD&SR) pursued for 30 years on a daily basis with students, alumni, staff and partners across the School’s two campuses.

Fully aware of its responsibility regarding the impacts of its decisions and activities on society and the environment, Mines Saint-Étienne positions SD&SR as a key element of its overall strategy. It is a leading reference on these issues through:

  • The creation, as early as 1991, of an internal training and research centre dedicated to the environment, integrated in 2013 into the Henri Fayol Institute
  • The creation of an SD&SR delegation, which leads a Social and Environmental Responsibility Committee (CoRSE), notably including the Health, Safety and Environment Engineer, a representative of the Georges Charpak Provence campus, and a representative of the engineering students
