Mines Saint-Etienne has partnered with Ezeeplant and Greencell to design Canopée, the first indoor air bio-purifier. The objective is to develop a plant-based air bio-purification system and transform green walls into bioreactors.
The Canopée Project
Since February 2023, researchers from Mines Saint-Etienne have been working in collaboration with Ezeeplant and Greencell, from the Saint Beauzaire biopole, on the Canopée project. The goal is to transform green walls into massive air purifiers. The idea originated from Ezeeplant, which currently offers mini-gardens for office or home installation based on the principle of phytoremediation. By partnering with the School, it will benefit from the expertise of the SPIN research center (Centre for Chemical Engineering) in indoor air quality measurement.
The Canopée project is certified by the Aléxéra competitiveness cluster. It is financially supported by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region and BPI France.
The Canopée Project at the Paris Olympics
Next year, the Canopée project will be showcased on a global scale through the installation in three commercial buildings for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The air bio-purification market is extremely vast: in France alone, there are 230 million square meters of existing surfaces that could be renovated, while the new construction market can integrate this technology from the design phase, in accordance with the RE2020 standard.
