This unique program is aimed at final-year high school students who have pursued the specialty combinations of Life and Earth Sciences/Mathematics, Life and Earth Sciences/Physics, or even Mathematics/Physics.

In September 2025, Mines Saint-Étienne will open the Preparatory and Degree-Granting Program in Engineering and Health (PDIS). It will be an alternative to the Preparatory Classes for Grandes Écoles (CPGE) and the entrance exam for medicine.

Delivered in partnership with the Faculty of Medicine of Jean Monnet University of Saint-Étienne, PDIS is a 2-year post-baccalaureate academics accessible via Parcoursup. It is ideal for students who are undecided between an engineering path and an academics in the health field.

With this program, we will therefore address two major issues. On the one hand, the growing demand for engineers in health industries and technologies. On the other hand, the desire to attract profiles from high school biology, often girls, who rarely pursue engineering schools. By launching this innovative academics, Mines Saint-Étienne confirms its status as a leader in engineering and health academics.

Jacques Fayolle, Director of Mines Saint-Étienne

The programme will cover the content of CPGE Physics-Chemistry while adding a reinforcement in biology and health. Students will thus take courses in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering Sciences, and Health Sciences taught by instructors from Mines Saint-Étienne and Jean Monnet University. In addition to these fundamental scientific blocks, they will take courses in Humanities, Languages, and Sports.

Two Degrees Upon Completion

Upon completion of the academics, students will obtain 2 degrees:

  • an institutional degree PDIS from Mines Saint-Étienne
  • a bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences from Jean Monnet University

They will be able to either access the 2nd year of medicine, or continue their studies in high-level academic programs such as the Ingénieur Civil des Mines (ICM) program, or join another school of the Institut Mines-Télécom or another university program.

As a reminder

Mines Saint-Étienne was the first engineering school to successively create a dual Pharmacist-Engineer degree (1993) and a dual Doctor-Engineer degree (2008). In September 2024, it even launched a 3rd dual degree in health: Dentist-Engineer.

It also offers other academics in the health field: generalist ‘Grande École’ engineer in health, certifying professional academics, particularly on decision support in hospital logistics.

The health academics at Mines Saint-Étienne rely on the expertise of the Health Engineering Center (CIS). Established in 2004, it strives to meet the major challenges of future health. Located on the hospital-university campus of Saint-Étienne, the CIS has 3,500 m2 to develop medical devices, software, and other services integrating innovative technologies.
