Cyclists received advice from a staff mechanic from the Saint-Étienne association Ocivélo to repair their bikes on Thursday, May 16.

A flat tire, faulty brakes, or a stubborn derailleur.

About ten cyclists came to repair their bikes at 158, cours Fauriel, in Saint-Étienne.

The more hands-on participants got their hands dirty under the marquee set up for the occasion in the La Rotonde parking lot. Others sought help from Pierre Medurio, a member of the Ocivélo association, seen in the blue smock in the photo.

This initiative was part of the 4th edition of May on a Bike. The event brings together all initiatives organized in France from May 1 to 31, 2024. Launched in 2020 and supported by the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion and the Ministry of Sports and the Olympic and Paralympic Games, May on a Bike aims to encourage people of all ages to cycle and to discover the many benefits of cycling in a fun and lively way.

Mines Saint-Étienne shifts gears

The “back in the saddle” initiatives launched by the School are bearing fruit.

The modal share of Mines Saint-Étienne staff commuting to work by bike increased between 2022 and 2023. The mobility survey conducted as part of the carbon footprint assessment reveals that 14% of staff use this sustainable mode of transport on a regular basis.

Cargo bikes for transporting goods and people, as well as folding bikes, have appeared in campus parking areas. These new machines are highly popular with students. In fact, an increasing number of them are using them for their daily commutes, thereby reducing their carbon footprint.

The Aix-Marseille-Provence Campus in the pack

The training was led by the local association ADAVA Pays d’Aix.

On May 2, in Gardanne, a participatory mechanics workshop had already taken place in the campus lobby. It complemented a training session entitled “the road from behind the handlebars,” which aimed to review best practices for safe cycling. Open to both students and staff, both events were a great success.
