Autumn is well underway in France, but our research centers continue to shine internationally! From Italy to Brazil, we look back at the international projects and successes of PhD students and researchers from Mines Saint-Etienne.
Elena Yan at the Brazilian Conference on Intelligent Systems (BRACIS)
Two conferences organized in Brazil, the “Brazilian Symposium on Databases” and the “Brazilian Conference on Intelligent Systems,” have crowned the work of Elena Yan, a PhD student at the Fayol Institute, whose article “Perspectives on Regulation Adaptation in Multi-Agent Systems: from Agent to Organization Centric and Beyond” was elected best paper of the 2025 edition.
A member of the Laboratory of Computer Science, Modelling and System Optimisation (LIMOS), Elena presented her work as part of the Workshop-School on Agents, Environments, and Applications (WESAAC), which aims to bring together researchers and students around the themes of intelligent agents and multi-agent systems.
Her award-winning article explores different approaches to adapting regulations in multi-agent systems (MAS). This work shows how intelligent systems can adjust their operating rules in real time to reconcile individual autonomy and collective coherence, drawing on several dimensions: agent, environment, interaction, and organization.
This is wonderful recognition for Elena Yan; our warmest congratulations on this ambitious work!
Melissa Bounouar, Gonzalo Puig-Samper, and Emile Balembois at the International Conference on Absolute Sustainability in Denmark
The first edition of the International Conference on Absolute Sustainability was held in Helsingor, Denmark. Entitled “From Less Bad to Good Enough,” this event hosted over 200 researchers from around the world, including three PhD students from the Fayol Institute, members of the Environment City Society laboratory.
At a time when scientists believe that certain planetary boundaries have now been exceeded, the researchers’ goal was to understand how human societies can evolve toward a model compatible with these limits. The work of the Fayol Institute PhD students was praised, illustrating the diversity and relevance of research conducted on the issue of absolute sustainability.
- Melissa Bounouar presented her work “Integrating AESA into Eco-design: A Case Study on A Dress”
- Gonzalo Puig-Sanper developed his reflection “France’s 2050 energy pathways: Evaluating environmental impacts through the lens of Decent Living Standards”
- Emile Balembois presented his thesis topic “Linking absolute environmental sustainability assessments to the sustainability transition of local policies: a case study of the Metropolis of Lyon”.
Congratulations to Mélissa, Gonzalo, and Emile for this noteworthy participation!
Juan Pablo Vasco Marin at EAC2025 in Italy
A PhD student at the Centre for Biomedical and Healthcare Engineering of Colombian origin, Juan Pablo defines himself as a bioengineer passionate about medical technology innovation. A member of BioPi (Biological Activity of Inhaled Particles Department), he is involved in developing an innovative medical device for the ex vivo ventilation of lung grafts.
While his work makes him a dedicated and ambitious PhD student, it is not his only strength, as Juan Pablo Vasco Martin won the prize for best scientific poster at the European Aerosol Conference EAC2025. Held in Lecce, Italy, this congress welcomes scientists from all over the world to share their research on aerosols. It also rewards the best scientific posters based on three criteria: the scientific quality of the documents presented, the clarity of the message, and the overall design of the poster.
This award highlights the work of BioPi, the SAINBIOSE laboratory, and all the engineers, biologists, and surgeons who supervise Juan Pablo’s thesis.
