Johan Debayle passed away suddenly at the age of 46. A minute of silence was observed in his memory during the start-of-year general assembly.

Johan Debayle, Professor at Institut Mines-Télécom (IMT), Deputy Director of the Georges Friedel Laboratory and of the Centre for Chemical Engineering (SPIN) at Mines Saint-Étienne, passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2024.

Through his expertise in mathematical morphology and image processing, he contributed to the influence of Labex Manutech-SISE and the EUR Manutech-SLEIGHT through several projects.

Academic excellence and international collaborations were the driving force behind his work. He was (associate) editor of seven top-tier international scientific journals and Director of the GDR MORPHEA.

Johan was also an adjunct professor at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Indonesia.

He had recently been appointed Senior Member of the international scientific association SPIE (International Society for Optics and Photonics) and Editor-in-Chief of the international scientific journal “Pattern Analysis and Applications” (Springer).

Mines Saint-Étienne extends its sincere condolences to his family, loved ones, and friends.


A fundraising drive to support cancer research

Following the death of Johan Debayle, an online fundraising drive to support the fight against cancer was organised at the initiative of the Management of Mines Saint-Étienne and the management of the SPIN centre. Open to all members of the school’s staff, it raised several thousand euros.
