It was awarded on Wednesday, June 19, to this eminent, world-renowned specialist in biomedical engineering during a ceremony held on Mines Saint-Étienne’s Saint-Étienne campus.

In a brand-new amphitheater, the Austrian scientist renowned for his research in biomedical engineering received the highest distinction awarded by French universities to honor “foreign nationals for eminent services rendered to science, literature, or the arts, to France, or to the university“.

This was an opportunity for Jacques Fayolle, Director of Mines Saint-Étienne, to pay him a heartfelt tribute: “We are gathered today for an exceptional occasion: the awarding of an honorary doctorate to Mr. Gerhard A. Holzapfel. It is with immense pride, for Institut Mines-Télécom and Mines Saint-Étienne in particular, that we honor a man whose remarkable contributions to health engineering, especially biomechanics, have left a significant mark. Good research can only be conducted by exchanging and confronting ideas with the best international professors in the discipline. This honorary doctorate thus recognizes both the work accomplished by Gerhard A. Holzapfel and the fruitful collaboration between the University of Graz and Mines Saint-Étienne over the years.

After warmly thanking the assembly, Professor Gerhard A. Holzapfel, moved and dressed in the traditional academic gown, gave a captivating lecture.

The event concluded with a cocktail reception and passionate discussions among the guests.
