Join a leading international master’s programme in materials science, at the heart of the energy–transport transition

The Master of Science in Engineering Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is a selective two-year programme (M1 + M2), taught entirely in English. It trains specialists capable of linking processing methods, microstructures and properties of metallic materials—with a strong focus on research and industrial challenges (sustainability, energy, hydrogen, manufacturing, etc.).

Target audience and prerequisites

The Master MSE is intended for applicants who wish to develop advanced expertise in materials / metallurgy, combining experimentation, characterisation and modelling, in a highly interactive teaching environment and top-level research setting.

Eligibility requirements

CriteriaRequirementDetails
Entry levelEntry to M1 onlyRecruitment takes place at the start of the programme (M1).
Academic levelValidated L3 (180 ECTS) or equivalentBachelor’s degree confirming a Bac+3 level (France or international).
Required fieldsRelevant prior educationPhysics, chemistry, materials science, mechanical engineering, process engineering, or related disciplines with a comparable scientific foundation.
Scientific foundationStrong fundamentals expectedMathematics, physics/chemistry depending on the track, scientific reasoning, analytical skills.
MethodsAcademic expectationsAbility to formalise a problem, interpret results, and document an approach (lab work, projects, reports).
LanguageProgramme taught in EnglishAbility to follow courses and produce deliverables in the language of instruction (see “Language requirements”).

Typical admitted profiles

  • Students holding a Bachelor’s degree (L3 / 180 ECTS) (or international equivalent) in physics, chemistry, materials or engineering with a strong scientific component.
  • Applicants with a strong interest in the relationships between processes – microstructures – properties, and in sectors related to advanced materials, sustainability, energy or industry.

Recommended prior skills

While not mandatory, these elements significantly strengthen an application:

  • initial foundations in materials science (or physical chemistry / mechanics of materials);
  • interest in characterisation (measurement, testing, analysis) and/or modelling (simulation, scientific computing);
  • project experience (advanced lab work, mini-projects, internship) demonstrating method, rigour and clear reporting.

Language requirements

  • Programme taught entirely in English.
  • B2 level expected.
  • Depending on the profile, an certificate may be requested to facilitate assessment (previous studies in English, standardised test, etc.).
  • Important note: as the programme is delivered 100% in English, a French test is not required for this master’s programme, unless a specific requirement applies to a candidate’s administrative file (depending on the situation).

Application procedure

Selection, carried out by the academic committee, takes place in three stages.

1. Submission of the application file

You must submit a complete application file including, at a minimum, the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV), detailing your academic background and experience (internships, projects, relevant activities).
  • Motivation letter, presenting your project and its fit with the Master MSE (materials, processes, microstructures, scientific approach).
  • Official transcripts for your entire post-secondary education (in particular the Bachelor’s/L3 and, where applicable, previous years).
  • Degrees / certificates: copies of degrees obtained and/or certificates of completion.
  • Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS or equivalent) if English is not the candidate’s native or language of instruction (or if requested by the platform/committee).
  • Recommendations: academic and/or professional letters of recommendation (optional depending on the platform; recommended if relevant).

A. French and European Union applicants

B. International applicants

Two cases may apply, depending on your country of residence and your situation.

1. “Études en France” procedure (Campus France)
If you reside in a country covered by this procedure, you must complete two steps:

2. Application via Mon Master
When the Mon Master platform applies to your situation, you submit your file via the platform, as indicated above.

International applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible in order to anticipate administrative processing times.

2. Review of the application file by the academic committee

The criteria assessed are:

  • the academic level and the fit of the academic background,
  • the coherence of the career plan,
  • the ability to follow a demanding master’s programme taught 100% in English,
  • transversal skills (motivation, rigour, ability to work).

3. Selection interview (optional)

An interview (remote or in person) may be organised to:

  • better understand the motivation,
  • clarify the intended track,
  • verify certain prerequisites.
