Permanent Members

Prof. Thierry Djenizian is the Head of the Flexible Electronics department at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Étienne (campus Aix-Marseille-Provence). In 2002, he received his PhD degree in Materials Chemistry for microelectronics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne and the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. His research activities are mainly focused on the nanostructuring of materials by electrochemical techniques for applications in energy storage and conversion at the micrometer scale. He is the author of over 80 publications in international journals, 20 proceedings, and 5 book chapters (H-index 23). He is one Conference Chair of Porous Semiconductors Science and Technology international conferences.

  • Prof. Sylvain Blayac

Pr. Xavier BODDAERT (M) is professor in the Provence Microelectronics Center CMP). He received the M.S. degree in Solid State Physics and the Ph.D.degree in Materials Science from the University of Lille (France) in 1985 and 1989, respectively. From 1990 to 2001, within the IBM Microelectronics Division, Corbeil Essonnes (France), he was responsible of the yield learning of a bipolar memory product, then developed processes in the area of dielectric deposition and finally took the management of the Analytical Laboratory. From 2001 to 2003, he was with Alcatel Optronics, Nozay (France), responsible for the reliability improvement of III-V lasers and detectors. In September 2003, he joined the “Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Étienne” as a professor in the Flexible Electronics Laboratory (FEL). His research activity is focused on the development of flexible printed devices: sensors and TFTs. He has authored over 30 papers published in journals and conference proceedings in the area of electrical characterization of defects in semiconductors, material characterization, reliability and printed electronics.

  • Dr. Cyril Calmes, research engineer

Sébastien Sanaur is an Associate Professor at the Centre Microélectronique de Provence of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Étienne. He received his MSc degree in Condensed Matter : Chemistry and Organization from Pierre et Marie Curie University (UPMC), France in 2000, and his PhD in Chemistry and Physics of Polymers from the same University in 2003. His project was funded by the Office National des Etudes et des Recherches Aérospatiales (ONERA) in Palaiseau, France. Subsequently, he then completed a post-doctoral research stay at Columbia University (NY, USA), at the Nanoscience Center and the Department of Chemistry, focusing on the realization of printed organic transistors. He joined the Centre Microélectronique de Provence in 2005. His research interests include the physics and engineering of transistors and lasers based on pi-conjugated polymers and small molecules for printed electronics, bioelectronics and medical applications.

  • Dr. Mohamed Saadaoui, associate professor

Joining the group in 2015, he initiated activities on stretchable electronics in the department. He investigates the potential of multi-stack sensors for artificial skin and supervises the integration of multiple photonic sensors for artificial retina and related applications. He is an engineer from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA) of Rennes. In 2010, he received a PhD in the Centre Suisse d’Electronique et de Microtechnique (CSEM) in Zürich under the supervision of professor Peter Seitz (Professor at UniNE and Adjunct Professor at EPFL). Then he joined Zhenan Bao group in Stanford for two years postdoctoral. From 2012 to 2014, he was postdoctoral in the Bioelectronic department at CMP under the supervision of Professor Róisín Owens.

In 2013, he obtained a PhD degree in material science for his work on metal/silicon alloys used as ohmic interconnections in microelectronics. He then joined the Flexible Electronics Department (FEL) at the Microelectronics Centre of Provence (CMP) from the Ecole des Mines de Saint-Étienne (EMSE). As a post-doctoral researcher, he worked on the heterogeneous interconnection of ultra-thin silicon chips onto flexible polymer substrates and on the development of stretchable planar interconnections. Since February 2016, he has been an assistant professor in the FEL and is investigating the development and mechanical reliability of flexible, lightweight, heterogeneous electronics for their integration into wearables.

  • Daniel Ochoa joigned the FEL department in 2020, to develop research activities on flexible organic electronics and energy storage.

His first projects deal with organic photodetectors for oximetry applications and stretchable Li-ion microbatteries. He graduated from Ecole Polytechnique and Mines Paristech, then did his PhD at EPFL in optoelectronics and semiconductor physics on high efficiency LEDs, then a post-doc at La Sapienza University in Rome on the physics of emitting quantum dots for Telecom applications. He worked at the ministry of industry (DGE) (2003-2006), then at the French Consulate in San Francisco (2006-2009) as scientific attaché, where he focused his missions on establishing academic and industrial collaborations in the fields of IT and Cleantechs. He joigned EMSE in 2009 as deputy director in charge of innovation and development. In 2014 he obtained the CAPI certificate from INPI, and became in charge of the intellectual property for the school since then.

Postdoctoral researchers and research engineers

I am Ankush Bhatia (Ankush.bhatia@emse.fr). I was born and brought up in New Delhi, India. I completed my Bachelors of Technology in Electronics and communication, and Masters of technology in Renewable Energy Engineering from India. I have completed my PhD from University Paris East Creteil (UPEC) in material science under the supervision of Dr. Rita Baddour Hadjean and Dr. Jean Pierre Pereira Ramos from Paris East Institute of Chemistry and Materials (ICMPE). Here in FEL, I am appointed as a Research & Development Engineer and I will work to the fabrication of Biodegradable Sodium-ion flexible micro batteries for medical applications.

Joe Troughton (joseph.troughton@emse.fr) is post doctoral researcher in the Department of Flexible Electronics (FEL) at the Center of Microelectronics in Provence of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Étienne. He completed an integrated masters in physics (MPhys) in 2013 at Durham University, UK, before completing an industry funded PhD in 2019 with the same university, working on improving the understanding of metal oxide based TFTs. He joined FEL in 2019 with research interests including the use of flexible and stretchable electronics in novel packaging materials, integration of implantable medical technology, and organic electronic devices.

Séverine DE MULATIER started her Ph.D. in the Department of Flexible Electronics in 2016. She received her engineering diploma from Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Ingénieurs de Caen (ENSICAEN) in Material Science with a specialization in Materials, Nanoscience and Energy, with a parallel Master 2 oriented towards Research. She completed her Master Thesis in Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) working on the design, microfabrication, and characterization of liquid-solid metal alloy thin films for stretchable sensors in robotic skin. Her current work is focused on the integration of flexible electronics in textile for presymptomatic detection of cardiovascular diseases, in collaboration with the start-up @-HEALTH based in Aix-en-Provence.

Clément Ghigo is a PhD student in the Flexible Electronics (FEL) department at the Centre Microélectronique de Provence. He received his master degree in Materials Science from Aix-Marseille Université in 2018. After an end-of-studies internship with the start-up Pellenc Energy specialized in energy storage solutions, he joined the company working on Li-ion battery electrodes’ fabrication process. In 2020, he joined FEL department when its topic evolved into an industrial thesis in collaboration with the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Étienne. The focus for his thesis is to design and characterize binder-free electrodes for high-energy density li-ion batteries.

Lionel FLIEGANS is a PHD student in the Department of Flexible electronics (FEL) at the Centre Microélectronique de Provence of the Ecole National Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Étiene. He received his master from Aix Marseille Université in 2017 focusing on material science and micro & nano technologie. He started to work as R&D enginner for the startup Panaxium in 2017, where he was working on the creation of functionalized medical devices for physiological recording. In Juin 2020, he joined FEL group for the Optiskin Project to develop stretchable optical waveguide for artificial skin.

Mathias Fayolle, started in 2020, m.fayolle@emse.fr. Mathias Fayolle received his engineering diploma from the Ecole Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Étienne in 2019. He did his end of term internship with Thales DIS in collaboration with the Department of Flexible Electronics. He then started his PhD in the same department and is currently working on the project IPCEI, which intend to simplify the development of flexible applications by creating a flexible prototyping board, slim and slight enough for wearable and bioelectronics applications. He specifically focuses on getting rid of the cable connections between the core of the system and the captors or actuators by using electrostatic communication.

Valentin Divay is a Ph.D. student in the department of flexible electronics (FEL) since 2020. He graduated from Ecole des Mines de Saint-Étienne (EMSE), as an engineer specialized in microelectronics and computer science (ISMIN program). He then joined the company EDITAG, working on embedded systems for the industry 4.0. Today, through the IPCEI program, his main focus for his thesis is to develop precise and low-drift weight sensors suitable for real-time inventory management.

Alban Albertengo is a PhD student in the Department of Flexible Electronics (FEL) at the Centre Microélectronique de Provence of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Étienne since 2020. He received his Bachelor in electronics and materials from Aix-Marseille Université in 2017, he continued with a Master’s Degree in nanoelectronics from the same University received in 2019. He made his internship at IM2NP working on numerical computation of multi-junction solar-cells made of 2D materials. Currently, the scope of his PhD is focused on the design and fabrication of new flexible and stretchable microbatteries.

Elias KHARBOUCHE is a PhD student in the Flexible Electronics (FEL) department at the Centre Microélectronique de Provence of the École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Étienne. He received his engineering degree in Microelectronics and Telecommunications from Polytech Marseille. After an embedded system engineer experience at Marine Tech, he worked as a research engineer in the Secure Architectures and Systems (SAS) departement at the Centre Microélectronique de Provence. He joined FEL in October 2019 in order to work on self-sufficient energy harvesters based on triboelectric nanogenerators. The scope of his PhD is focused on the understanding of different transduction phenomena operating in the harvesting of wind energy.

Omar Kassem,  started in 2016, graduated in 2019, than did a postdoc in our group. The scope of his PhD was focused on the development of new inks based on tin nanoparticles to be printed by inkjet on flexible substrate.

Simon Régal, started in 2017 and graduated in 2020. During his PhD,he has been working on the continuous pupillary dilatation reflex monitor through the eyelid. This device aim to perform analgesia monitoring during surgery. He is now doing a postdoc at CEA Grenoble.

Yanid Arango, started a PhD in 2017. Move to Bordeaux to finish her PhD on the development of organic ferroelectric capacitors printed on CMOS wafers.

Stuart Hannah, started a postdoc in 2017 for a bit more than 1 year. He worked on stretchable sensor to record bladder wall stretch.

Bastien Marchiori, started in 2015 and graduated in 2018. His work was focused on the development of stretchable electronics in order to design organic biosensors. He is now at Panaxium
